Straight out of university in the summer or 2005, I embarked on a project with Matt Latchford, a fellow student, to design the digital backdrop to a pantomine Jekyll and Hyde, performed at the Broadway Barking theatre in London.
We designed the backdrop so it was completely interactive with the actors and lights on stage, and we programmed the animation so that it was controllable by the technicians live on the night of the show. There were many things for us to consider in the design: positioning of actors and props, lighting, and special effects. Everything was designed around a pair of doors in the middle of the backdrop screen, crucial for the actors to enter and exit the stage. Matt lead the illustration whilst I concentrated on the animation and setting up the action scripting in Flash.
